15-5. That was the score Monday night as the Rays smashed the visiting Yankees. "Wow! The Rays spanked the Yankees! what a wonderful ways to opened he season at home." Said Angela Soto. The fans poured in to the Trop looking forward to the season opener on our home turf. But as Tuesday came around, and the fans flocked to the stadium to hopefully see another winning game, many fans left disappointed. Mistakes and misses plagued the Rays as the game went on. Garza retired three hitters, allowing only a sacrifice fly to Jorge Posada that put the Yankees on the board. "That's one of the lessons learned when you start pitching," Garza said. "When a guy gets to third with no outs, leave it there. You count that run as already in, and you keep it small after that."
Nick Swisher homered on a 2-2 Garza offering leading off the fourth to put the Yankees up, 2-0. "I gave him a cookie -- I threw a two-seamer in and it just tailed over the middle of the plate, his hot zone down and in," Garza said. "And he made me pay for it. It happens, just wipe it off and get the next guy." The game kept the score close until Jeter stepped to bat hitting a three-run homer in the ninth finishing out the game 7-2.
During the third and final game against the Yankees, the Yankees captain had an RBI single in the top of the ninth inning to lead a 4-3 win over the Rays. B.J. Upton's RBI double took Akinori Iwamura home to get the Rays' first run. Carl Crawford then doubled home Upton to make it 2-0 Rays. Robinson Cano tied in the top of the fourth with a two-run homer off Andy Sonnanstine. Carlos Pena put the Rays ahead when he led off the bottom of the fourth 3-2. Jeter and Damon each begin the eighth with doubles to tie the score at 3.
